    Re: Bought tires online today..

I didn't buy my last set online, but did a lot of research at tirerack.com. I also used their pricing to get the local dealer (Tires Plus) to drop their price to match Tire Rack. It saved me about $110 and I still get the lifetime rotation, etc.

This is the route I'm going when I replace my tires in the next couple years.

And the prices, oh my! Comparing the same exact tire at wal mart versus tirerack.com and after shipping/mounting/taxes/balancing/etc, I can still buy online and save $100 on four tires. But it gets better, after looking at an equivalent alternative, I am saving $170 by buying online and bringing them in to Wal-Mart to mount, etc.

Better selection, better research, better prices, can't lose.

$50 shipping but no sales tax. Wal-mart charges $5 more per tire to mount if you don't buy the tires from them...

I know it sounds weird buying tires online, but I am giddy over saving $170 and getting the exact tires I want anyway!
Did you try out the different styles on your ride? I like that feature at tirerack.com.

No, its a station wagon and I am a no style type of guy, but yeah cool if you have a cool ride.

I basically looked solely at snow and ice ratings due to last winter and my wife's poor driving skills.

i've used tire rack the last 2 times i've bought tires. awesome info and much lower prices. i actually looked today again at Sears and what they recommended for my car, i have a weird tire size, (235 65 17) was the Goodyear Wrangler RS A at $174. I looked at tire rack and they were about $50 cheaper per tire. Plus there are some great reviews, etc. And according to tire rack that particular tire is not very good. The guy at Sam's called Goodyear, Badyear.

I used to buy at Tirerack, but the last couple of times I've done this same thing also.

When you buy online you should make sure the tires aren't too old; really same thing for buying local. There are some old tires out there...

I had a reputable tire guy tell me one time that he'd rather drive on a used Michelin than a new Goodyear. Hadn't bought one since...

Try match.com, may be cheaper than new tires.

I've been buying from Tire Rack for years. They even had a deal with Trickle's where the appointment was scheduled and the tire shipped to them so I didn't have to mess with them.

Trickle's didn't seem to care much for the arrangement. I got hassled about the tires I selected, but hey, that's between them and The Tire Rack. Saved $100 or better.

I'd rather drive on Cooper Tires.

    Re: Bought tires online today..

I bought one set at tire rack, then drop shipped them - saved money a few years ago.

Last month I quoted Tirerack and local dealers - but only was $30 savings at Tirerack. I did all the research on Tirerack and compared to Consumer Reports. Tiresplus does quote online, as well, which other dealers will price match. Some sales guys at the dealer want to downplay the Tirerack ...saying its not real world data, but sales guy stories are....I do like Tirerack.

    Re: Bought tires online today..

I need to buy tires for my 2003 explorer. I've been driving bald for at least 3 months basically thinking that I was going to trade it in and buy a new suv since I need a third row seat that I don't have now (baby #3 coming in november), but now I think I'm going to drive it a little while longer say 6 - 18 months and just shove all three in the back seat on those rare times when I have to. So I've got to get tired, cheap tires really. I've not heard good things about goodyear, but they seem to be the cheapest around. given my goals for the vehicle any one have opinions on whether they'd be adequate?
Hope is not a method. Soon is not a time.

If you are really just going to drive it for another 6-18 months then I would go to Wal-Mart, Costco, etc and get the cheapest tires they make. I have a feeling that bald tires on a 2003 Explorer are pretty loud out on the interstate so any new tire should be better.
