    Bought tires online today..

I did my homework, compared prices, etc, and finally decided to buy tires online.

I shopped around locally first. I didn't like prices, selection, etc. So I checked out tirerack.com and found a ton of ratings, research etc.

And the prices, oh my! Comparing the same exact tire at wal mart versus tirerack.com and after shipping/mounting/taxes/balancing/etc, I can still buy online and save $100 on four tires. But it gets better, after looking at an equivalent alternative, I am saving $170 by buying online and bringing them in to Wal-Mart to mount, etc.

Better selection, better research, better prices, can't lose.

$50 shipping but no sales tax. Wal-mart charges $5 more per tire to mount if you don't buy the tires from them...

I know it sounds weird buying tires online, but I am giddy over saving $170 and getting the exact tires I want anyway!

    Re: Bought tires online today..

The tires I researched were no cheaper than Costco and they offer me lifetime rotation.

I guess it depends on the tire. I did buy from tires.com one time with no issues.

People that don't look at tirerack.com first are crazy. Tires are crazy expensive, but they always kick balls(in a good way) when it comes to good prices.

I have been using tirerack since 2003, great stuff, lower prices, and the Big O across from my office mounts and balances the set of 4 for $75. You still come out $100 cheaper and you get better tires.

I've bought my last 5 set of tires online. As others have said, I save about $100 total on four tires. And you get the exact tire you want.

    Re: Bought tires online today..

I've just gone to tire places and told them what tire I was looking at and what Tirerack had for a price on the tire and at 2 places now, they matched the tirerack price. So I guess I'm still using Tirerack but I haven't actually bought a tire from them. Great site for research though.

    Re: Bought tires online today..

I've got a friend who swears that retreads are the way to go. Recycled tires with new treading installed on them. Most people stay away from them because they fear the treads will separate from the tire, but there are a few really good companies out there and the technology is very improved so that they are basically a new tire. And at probably 50-70% of the cost of new tires. My friend has bought several sets in a row now. He has never had a problem and doesn't know of anyone else that uses them who has had any trouble.

This is the route I'm going when I replace my tires in the next couple years.
