Re: 1st possible case of Swine Flu now in Iowa (LINK)
I have a friend who works for the Dept of Homeland Security, specifically in the area of disaster recovery. I guess they run simulations all the time for different scenarios such as terrorist attacks, Hurricanes, and viral pandemics. We were speaking the other night about the swine flu and he said that while he didn't think this particular outbreak was something to get overly worked up about, he did advise a little precaution such as buying a little extra bottled water and food, so in a worst case scenario you wouldn't have to leave your home for a week or so.
He also said that if a global pandemic did ever occur, that our infrastructure is nowhere near capable of handling it. Kind of scary, but at the same time, he was pretty convinced that this was pretty unlikely.

Just for the record, the World Health Organization has only confirmed 7 deaths associated with the outbreak so far. WHO | Swine influenza - update 4 -

I feel bad for those that have died but I won't even be remotely concerned about this until an American dies. People die from things in 3rd world countries all the time that nobody dies from here.

Is there any report that this virus is transmitted by swine? Anything I have read says it is a new strain transmitted by humans that has a mixture of avian/human/and swine flu genetics.

I really fail to see why this is news at all. There are tons of different strains of the flu. How is this one any different.
Symptoms? Just like the normal flu.
Transmission? Just like the normal flu.
Steps to prevent it? Just like the normal flu.
Treatment? Just like the normal flu.
Holy crap, people are coming down with the flu during flu season, everybody run for your lives!!!
