I'm considering starting up a small home brewing operation for my own enjoyment. Anybody out there care to offer up any advice? How big of an investment is needed to make quality stuff and what resources have you found most helpful? I like hefe weizens and pale ales the best. Are these types fairly easy for the first timer?

Most people start out doing 'extract' brewing, which uses powdered or concentrated sugars from malt. this type of brewing has around a 150$ startup cost or so for equpiment if you already have a big pot to work with.
I recommend finding a local hombrew/winemaking shop and asking them. Beer Crazy in Urbandale is a great place if you are in central Iowa.

I second the suggestion about going to Beer Crazy. He has everything that you need to get started and he is very knowledgeable about brewing. He also has a pretty good selection of commercial beer there.

Plan on spending around $250-300 to get started. After that you are looking at around $30-50 per batch depending on what you make. Each batch is 5-6 gallons.
Now that MBB is back, do we still have to pretend that WBB matters?
I looked at doing it a few years ago, but figured in the end I probably didn't want to drink that much and that it wasn't that much more expensive buying it off the shelf. There is so many more choices than there used to be.

Yeah you don't do it to save money. It costs just as much to make it as it does to buy it off the shelf... the cheaper stuff though. I can brew some excellent trappist tasting style beers. They would cost you about $4 a bottle in a liquor store and I get around 50-60 bottles for $40.

My palate just isn't that sophisticated to prefer the high end stuff. A bottle of Sam Adams tastes about as good as anything to me. That's not to say I don't sample Fat Tire, Boulevard, etc. etc.
