I'm not saying people should "fly off the handle", although apparently that phrase means something entirely different to you. But for people to be cautious, I see nothing wrong with that. I was meaning more of a national scale then just a single section of a university.

Actually I think they confirmed another death in the U.S. of a woman about 30. Still not much to get excited about but probably something to continue keeping a close eye on.

It's something people in the field should keep an eye on.
It's something the public should have 0 fear of at this point.
eff the media.

I thought I heard she died of the flu virus. What were her serious health problems?

Re: Whats your take on H1N1
One thing that does bother me is all these people saying that the planet is due for a pandemic. Because we haven't had one in awhile does not make it more likely that we will get one. The odds are the exact same to have a new disease come up wether we had a different pandemic last year or 50 years ago. The odds of it happening are what they are, you don't get "due" for something like that. Also, although many of you are frustrated with the media and government all I have to do is look at how some other places around the world have reacted and it makes me realize relatively speaking our media and government don't do that bad of a job. Still a lot of room for improvement, but we take for granted what we have sometimes.
However, I will say that there is a good chance most of us will see a pandemic in our lives if not more that one, its just the way they seem to work out. The thing I am curious about is how the odds of a pandemic have changed in current times. I think modern medicine and the huge change in communication should help lower the odds. But at the same time it is countered a bit by the increased travel around the world and interconnection of many areas now compared to the past.

Re: Whats your take on H1N1
I prefer to call it the "headline flu", because I am getting sick of hearing about it. The media has a way of pounding these stories to death. However, I think that you have to take these things seriously, because the potential for disaster does exist. However, health authorities pretty much screwed the pooch on reacting to this. I'm guessing that whenever it hits, precautions from the government or world health organizations will be too little, too late. With that said, I think that more modern societies have advanced by leaps and bounds over what they knew in 1918, so while it could be inevitable, I think it is less likely than it has been before. -

Why Swine Flu is "not like" the flu and will be an epidemic.
#1 Its not treatable.
Oh wait, neither is the flu.
#2 People are dying from it!
Hmm, about 36,000 people die every year from complications from the flu and 200,000 people are hospitalized... I hear 1 person in Kansas died from the swine flu...
#3 People are dying in Mexico!
Yeah, its Mexico.

Get a life... Or tell me you were adding alot of sarcasm which didn't come through. Haha sorry thought that statement was out there enough that a sarcasm pirate would be overdoing it Yes, of course I don't think that pork producers are going to launch a strand of beef flu and chicken flu.

Re: Whats your take on H1N1
Perhaps the biggest potential problem I see is that the public will become inured (inured - Definition from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary) to the iresponsible doomsday reports by media, and when there is a real pandemic we'll all be saying, "Oh, it's just the media again." Those who want to be first with the worst news now won't have our attention when it's really needed.
Like the story of the boy who cried wolf.
