Stupid, dont understand it, whats the DSM convention center for? I hope they shoot this down. Use the money towards a new courthouse.
Nevermind that a lot of the money will go to fancy judge chambers and better offices for the bureaucrats. Social workers are near criminals! How could we be so stingy with over $100 million. Heartless says I.
What a colossal waste of money! Spend the $$ to fix the birdland levee.
I have absolutely no idea why this would be a good idea. Any takers to explain it?
I can't think of a better time to expand a auditorium that we need so much:jimlad::jimlad::jimlad:
So Shawn Johnson can tango for all of us? Idk God this is so stupid.Quote:
Supervisors agreed to move forward with a new 30,000 square foot ballroom on the west side of Veterans Memorial Auditorium that would share the ground level with the arena space. The lobby would also be renovated.
Because they are losing money hand over fist on conventions so this extra space will get organizations to say yes and stay in DSM and spend in DSM so in the long run it will be worth it...I originally thought the same thing until I talked to a friend there about this.
41.8 million? pfff... give that money to me and I'd do thousands of better things with it than that. Huge waste of money IMO.
If a convention is going to pass us by because HyVee Hall isn't big enough, are they going to come and split the convention between HyVee Hall and Vets? They cut too many corners on the Iowa Events Center and now they are trying to buy their way out of it. They made the same mistake with the Well. Now that we have it, we find out that we are a couple thousand seats short of surrounding arenas and the big events are still passing us by.
The proper improvement to Vets would be a wrecking ball followed by an entertainment district (See the P&L in KC), or a major convention hotel. The only crappier way to invest this cash would be to give it to GM.
"Edwards said the study conducted eight months ago shows that 10 years after the expansion is completed, 43 additional conventions could bring $38 million to the city."
#1 I'm willing to bet these numbers are inflated
#2 So it's going to take more than 10 years to earn the money back. That's a lousy ROI.
#3 Are they saying that none of those conventions would come to DM anyway? Is the barn really going to be a big draw?
#4 What are the expenses for maintenance and employees for the next 10 years?
#5 After 12 years and you finally break even (best case scenario) then they will be asking for money again.
