Best Guitar Solo Ever
Two come to mind.....Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin at 5:56 of video......and another could be Joe Walsh at the end of Hotel California (Eagles)....

I'm gonna go with Cliff Gallop and his 1956 Gretsch Duo Jet, with a Bigsby Wammy.
Jimmy Page would fall at Cliff's feet, bowing reverently and saying, "I'm not worthy....I'm not worthy.."

First off it's three guitars playing all that. You're going to get something that sounds good with three guitars all playing off each other. Plus it's more of a rythmic solo than just pure ad-lib. I'll take Clapton or Jimi by themselves any day.

Re: Best Guitar Solo Ever
Hard to rate just one.
Keith Richards in the Rolling Stones "Can't You Hear Me Knocking." If I had to pick one, this would probably be it, even though I think the other guys listed are better guitar players.
Several Clapton's
Several Hendrix's
Several Stevie Ray Vaughn,
Eddie Van Halen's Intruder (Pretty Woman intro)
At a different sound, Jerry Garcia had some pretty impressive ones too, since they weren't "hard rock," they normally aren't considered.
Edit: I feel bad, I almost forgot Santana... several by him too.

Re: Best Guitar Solo Ever
Oh and to add my two cents. I hate to just please the masses, but I still have not found anyone as good at guitar as SRV. Scuttle Buttin is just insane, its one long guitar solo for a song, although rythmic in it's nature at times as well.
With pure talent, energy, and just insance guitar playing...SRV is at the top of my list.

Re: Best Guitar Solo Ever
Some favs:
Mike McCready (Pearl Jam) "Alive"
Neil Young "Cortez the Killer"
Warren Haynes and DMB "Cortez the Killer"
SRV "Texas Flood"
and of course, Skynyrd "Free Bird". I don't care if it isn't that technically amazing, it's one WILD ride...

Many by Alex Lifeson of Rush. I couldn't pick a favorite.

Re: Best Guitar Solo Ever
OK, I'm cheating, but the very first thing I thought of was this intro, which might as well be a guitar solo.
