There are talks of some form of AT&T / Verizon merger, at least in part, which would expedite this.
AT&T/Verzion doesn't make a whole lot of sense from a technology standpoint. They are on VERY disparate networks, and Verizon stands very little to gain from merging with AT&T, IMO.

The iPhone does nothing that my 3 year old Treo 755p doesn't do, and my 755 does very few things that a 5 year old Treo 650 doesn't do, and the Treo 650 doe svery few things that the 6 year old Treo 600 didn't do. It might do it a bit prettier, but it doesn't have any capability that I don't already have. That's honestly what has kept me from jumping ship.
In fact, my Treo does things the iPhone still can't (at least within the AT&T terms of use). I can't tether my laptop to an iPhone. I can't use slingplayer via 3G with an iPhone. I can't change out the battery in an iPhone. There are a handful of things that keep it from being a "killer" phone for everyone, IMO. It's alright as a toy, but not as a serious tool that I have to be able to depend on when I travel (which is mostly when I rely on my phone).
I'm leaning towards my perfect setup being a Palm Pre and a netbook for travelling.

Exactly. If iPhone ever went to Verizon I'd probably jump all over it, but it's simply because I use my cell phone differently than you use yours. For you your business depends on your cell phone use. For me it's a toy, and I'm actually kind of "meh" about my Blackberry as far as a toy goes. I may "want" an iPhone, but I'd hardly call it the bastion of technological innovation. Palm was there long before Apple - Apple just packaged it in a way that appealed to the masses (and using an iPod marketing ploy didn't hurt it any).

The Palm Pre does look like a nice phone. I just have a hard time going back to Palm. I absolutely hated their software. Ill have to try the new stuff, maybe I can be convinced.

I can totally understand that.
I have never really thought that the Blackberry would make a great consumer device, and the marketing kinda baffled me.
Just like how I don't think that many serious business people (i.e. people who work in an "enterprise environment") are really well served by the iPhone. Different horses for different courses, IMO.
What I'm very interested in is how the Pre does in the consumer space. I have few doubts it will be a pretty huge hit in the business/techie realm. I'm very surprised at the pricepoint - I was expecting it to be at least twice what it will sell for.
WebOS looks absolutely stunning on a variety of levels that beat even the iPhone (multitasking in particular). Couple in the built in GPS, A2DP, Sprint's EVDO RevA network, Wifi and the crazy cool wireless charger and I think there's a great future for this device.

I don't question a guy who is a VP with Verizon.

Does sprint lock down GPS software like Verizon does? God I hate that. I would love to use my phones full capability..

Your prejudice is showing. The e-mail is more easily integrated into the user interface than almost any other phone out there. The Blackberry is incredibly simple to use - so much so that even my grandmother can use it. It works very well to tether, it has good battery life, and there are tons of applications for it, as well. It's also (when you combine it with the iPhone) destroying all of the competition.

All that really means is I get to delete my junk mail as soon as it shows up in my inbox... (My friends and I don't e-mail each other all that much).

I will say I have been enjoying RIMM's stock.

I am tied to my e-mail at all times, so this is invaluable to me. I would think that, for the vast majority of users of the Blackberry, this is one of the main reasons they got it.
Obviously I got mine because of business, but it has other items on it that make it invaluable, as well. The Blackberry Messenger allows you to essentially text other Blackberry users (regardless of phone provider) for free. There are tons of other features that I could pump up, but if you don't take the time to learn them, it doesn't matter.

It just does it better.
Although, I don't recall the 755p having a touch interface. There are already nearly infinitely more apps for iPhone. And, I believe the 755p also didn't have integrated GPS navigation.
But, I digress...

That's funny! I think Palm actually invented the touch screen. That has been Palm's calling card since they released the first Palm Pilot nearly 20 years ago.
The treo doesn't have integrated GPS as you mention, but it does have a keyboard, which is why I'll never go back to the iPhone.
Like someone said before, each phone is targeted to a specific audience. Depending on how you use your phone, will most likely dictate your preference....each has it's own strengths and weaknesses.
