This guy sounds familiar of my favorite ump when I was in city league baseball around age 13 or 14. This guy was hardcore, same deal with the rule book and such. The best thing was when the pitcher would throw a strike, he would then proceed to holler as loud as possible, STRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
Somewhat unusual but the kicker was always that there was now KE at the end of it, just stri.
As a former umpire I get pretty peeved when i see umpires look and do stupid things on/off the field.
I was at the RecPlex in Burlington, IA for my niece's soccer game last week and they were hosting a ASA tourney at the same time. The ASA umpire who was on a field that was the furthest away from the concession stand/umpire/management office was actually behind home plate smoking a cigarette in between games. He had his full umpire uniform on as well. I wanted to punch him in the face for stupidity.
I was the home plate ump last year for the Iowa Games. They have the old school chest protector you hold, then have to hold the clicker with the other hand. Parents kept yelling at me, "can you hold up the count?"
If anyone knows what its like to use that type of chest protector you know thats a pain in the butt...
Do you not have your own equipment? The under-the-shirt kind is much better, in several ways, not the least of which is the person being able to move well. But, if you're only volunteering -- like at the Iowa games, I can see you not buying your own stuff.
I remember when I was a kid we had a little league umpire named Lee Buton (boo-ten) aka slim. He was VERY passionate about his little league umping as well. This thread makes me giggle just thinking of him.
While on live TV, Ford used a vulgar term to describe a private part of the female anatomy, adding that he was “happily married” and “got more than enough to eat at home.”
