I thought Dark Knight lived up to its huge expectations which is nearly impossible to do 1) with a summer blockbuster and 2) with a super hero film. Compared to "blockbusters" like Spiderman 2 & 3, Pirates of the Caribbean 3, The Day the Earth Stood Still, etc., Dark Knight blows them out of the water IMO.

Re: What's the best movie of the decade?
After reading all 15 pages of this thread, I have the following observations:
1. Most people don't understand the concept of a decade
2. Most people don't understand that the word "best" is singular and is only requesting a one-movie response
3. Phaedrus should lower his expectations when about to watch a movie - he would probably enjoy more of them. I don't think movies are good sources of enlightenment, just mindless entertainment. If it's enlightenment you're looking for, read a book or go to church, etc!
4. Apparently I'm the only one on this message board who truly appreciates the genious of Mean Girls! No matter how wacked out Lindsay Lohan is, I can never not watch that movie when its on TV! (emphasis on the visual aspect of the movie)

If you knew anything about Phaedrus personally, you wouldn't have to make such a statement as he clearly does get his enlightenment from books, church, etc. And considering he's much more enlightened than most of us on this site...
As far as what I consider the best of the decade, I'd have to go with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, especially Return of the King. I think the most underrated movie of the decade is The Life of David Gale. Incredible movie with a twist that most people don't see coming. My other favorites of the decade are The Departed and Gran Torino.
I also think it's too bad that American Beauty was made one year too early, because otherwise it would belong in this discussion. The same with the Matrix, but IMO it was highly tarnished by its two sequels.

I absolutely agree with this - it's one of the few blockbusters that has lived up to most expectations. I have never seen The Day the Earth Stood Still, but I actually laughed out loud in the theater at the others - mostly at points that weren't supposed to be funny. I very rarely like the big blockbusters, but this was one of the few that were quite good. I just don't think that it was the best film overall of the decade.
