So i Im looking at getting a laptop. i went into best buy today and would have loved to get a Mac but dont want to pay the price for them.. And the guy at best buy said a new Sony Vaio is the next best thing to getting a Mac. So my question for you computer guys is.. is that a good one to buy considering it is 800 dollars or go cheaper with the same quality???

Pretty close to any laptop that you get at Best Buy or any like place will be more than plenty. I've got a baseline HP G60 from Best Buy with 4 GBs of RAM and a 250 GB hard drive that is more than enough for most things I can throw at it. I can run iTunes, watch a DVD on my external monitor, have Word, Excel, and Chrome also running with no problem. Computer was $549 and then I got the extended warranty for 3 years so if I drop it or spill something on it I can take it back in and they'll replace it for free (as long as it's a hardware issue and not software).Quote:

They're going to try and sell you a ton of extra crap. Don't buy any of it. Most people are going to tell you Geek Squad sucks, etc. but I've never actually had an issue with them.Quote:

Just make sure you get 4+gb of RAM, and a reasonably sized hard drive (80+ gb).
Honestly, for what you want to do, if it's got those two stats, it will work fine. I, personally, prefer Dell, but that's just personal preference. They are all roughly the same these days.
I'd advise against any of the extended warranties or accessories they try and push on you. The manufacturers warranty will cover 95% of the stuff that will go wrong with the machine, which would be likely to happen in the first 30 days or so anyway. Put the money you would have spent on the extended warranty in the bank and spend it on repairs if you need to (but you shouldn't).
Best Buy makes almost all of their actual profit on those plans and accessories.
Whatever you do do NOT buy any cables at Best Buy. Monoprice.com has them for literally a fraction of the cost, even factoring in shipping.
I'd recommend this over anything best buy sells.

It comes with either windows xp or vista. I would recommend adding a extra 1 gig of memory for $10. It comes with a 320 gb external hard drive too. Another option that I think is worth while is a the $50 more for the 9 cell battery.
I think that unless you have the 64 bit version of your operating system it won't recognize more than 3 Gigs of RAM, can anyone back me up on this?
My advice would be wait for Windows 7 (not long) and then check out the Dell website. I am on my 6th year with my current Dell laptop. You should be able to get a very good one for under $500.
Has Best Buy changed their policy? The last time I bought a monitor there and it quit working 3 months later, the d-bags there told me they had to send it in and see if they could repair it before they just exchanged it. Estimated waiting time 3-6 weeks. Haven't bought anything of much worth since from that jointQuote:
