Feral Swine vs. Iowa Cougar
I watched the feral swine program last night also. My question is will our Iowa cougar problem take care of the feral swine problem?
All truisms are false. All of them. -

Re: Feral Swine vs. Iowa Cougar
I of course had to go with the Cougars here
(Graduating from CR Kennedy has nothing to do with that at all... )

As far as the pigs go...I was unaware that Iowa had any feral swine? I thought that was more of a problem in the south. If Iowa does have feral swine, it could be bad, as they breed like rabbits. And I highly doubt our population of cougars could keep their numbers down. I mean...there's got to be like, 20 or so cougars in Iowa at most. According to the DNR, there aren't any!
Feral swine can get pretty big, but I'd say a fully grown cougar could easily take down a "normal" sized one. Maybe we should start an Iowa cougar breeding program? -

They isolate the old and the weak from the herd. All truisms are false. All of them. -

I talked with a DNR rep at the Pork Congress last year, he says there are some out there. I don't think the European genetics have gotten to Iowa yet, but he was talking about sows in heat breaking into boar test stations to get bred. That's pretty horny. All truisms are false. All of them. -

Man there are so many comments that could be made about this that would get this thread closed Oh we will fight, fight, fight for Iowa State, and may her colors ever fly!!! Pig Bomb the series is a blast on Discovery to watch those good ol boys go out in the swamp looking for Matilda Hogzilla.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -
Re: Feral Swine vs. Iowa Cougar
Wow, lots of votes for the piggies.
I realize that a cougar wouldn't stand a chance against Hogzilla but most of these pigs don't get anywhere near that big. I think they'd be easy prey for an apex predator like a cougar.

Re: Feral Swine vs. Iowa Cougar
The average crossbred wild pig is 400 plus pounds. Any 120 pound Cougar has a hard time keeping up with a rampaging 30 mph feral swine. With their sharp teeth, longer snout, and long legs, my money is on the breeding machine. The population has swelled from 1.5M to 6.0m in the wild. There are not that many cougars in the states to handle them. Even the bear population is not large enough to control the swine. The swine can outproduce the predators. The Southlands is becoming Hawg Heaven.
One lady did not like the ferals in her backyard, but when they showed up in her front yeard, that was too much. They are eating machines and can survive on meat or vegetables or trash.
Ferals over cougars by a large margin.

Re: Feral Swine vs. Iowa Cougar
Pigs are tough, and if they hang out in herds they could take the cougar down. The feral ones would have tusks that would pierce the cougar's skin. The Pigs would overcome!

Yeah I watched that last night...pretty crazy to think about. I liked how they had captions at the bottom so you could understand what they were saying. The "boss hog" at 6 foot 2000lbs running 70mph would be ridiculous if it ever happened.
