I use a lot of a spice mix called sandwich sprinkle from a spice store in Des Moines. It's not the cheapest place in the world but its very cool and you can get some good stuff there!
Go there and check out stuff, smell it, and get on their mailing list, they have a pretty cool catalog and it seems like most months there is a coupon in it for a small free spice of the month like a BBQ one, a pepper one, etc.
As far as spices go, fresh cracked black pepper is hard to beat. And since my brother isn't here to yell, "That's not a spice!", Emeril's Italian Essence is great on a roasted bird rubbed with olive oil. I also like the Montreal Steak/Chicken blends. Recently discovered paprika. Google Chicken Paprikash - easy and delicious. And since we aren't being technical about what's a spice, get some tahini paste and try making your own hummus. It's a good thing.
I was a victim of a series of accidents, as are we all.
This is a rub that I got from Food Network's "Down home with the Nealys".
I rub it on chickens and then grill them on an "up the butt" chicken roaster. Very good rub. It would work on anything you want to slow roast or smoke.
