Tomatoes coming into season
Our plants are coming into season right now (we were a bit late in planting) as are our neighbors.
I just picked one off the plant to have with lunch. Between sweet corn and garden tomatoes, I love Iowa summers.
We planted 1 cherry, 1 regular and 1 ramona plants.
anyone else starting to taste the rewards of your garden tomato plants?
-keep.
Re: Tomatoes coming into season
Not even close yet.
I planted in mid May - which was probably a little too early with the cool weather. They really got stunted.
We have some greens just starting to form. But we're still a few weeks out.
I planted 6 regular tomatoes of various heirloom varieties. And 2 cherrys. The regular plants are doing ok, but a little too shaded. The cherrys are in good sun and going crazy. Not many blooms yet however.
But all were 75+ days, so it's about on pace.
Re: Tomatoes coming into season
I've had a few cherry tomatoes.
I never used to like fresh tomatoes, but the older I get the more I like them. My 4 year old will eat them like apples.
They're always best off the vine. Winter time ones just don't compare.
Re: Tomatoes coming into season
Mine are close. I planted six cherry and two regular plants. They all have tomtoes growing and are probably one week from picking the first batch. I tried the upside down method this year and hung them from a plant stand. So far , so good. I also have two pepper plants that are starting to bud. BLT's with sweet corn is a favorite summer meal of mine.

Do the deer eat tomatoes? I swore I had more tomatoes but when I checked again there were half as many. I figured it was my Hawk neighbor messing with me.
Re: Tomatoes coming into season
I've got a couple of tomatoes on one of my vines that are turning red but aren't quite ready yet... rather small ones, but I think that variety was supposed to be small / more flavorful
No buds yet from the Cherry tomatoes or the larger slicing varriety of tomatoe I planted (beefsteak or similar type), but the plants grew like 2 feet last week while I was gone
I think I need to pinch off the top shoot so it'll focus on fruit now...

yes, they will come right up and eat green ones right off of the bush. i've seen 'em do it in the middle of the day.
I'm hoping for a late frost with mine!
Re: Tomatoes coming into season
I've been picking about 10 cherry tomatoes each day. My 17 month old daughter eats half of them on the spot.
Next week=huge yield. Probably get 100 per plant.
Re: Tomatoes coming into season
In four different garden areas: 60 tomato plants, roughly 150 pepper plants

Wow! Salsa, here i come!
Seriously, what do you do with all of those?
Re: Tomatoes coming into season
I also have two upside down tomato plants growing out on our deck. Both have about 4-8 small green tomatoes starting to form. Not sure how big they are supposed to get. I'm hoping for good results from this experiment!

Damn! I thought planting 21 tomato plants was pushing it. Don't even know how to tend to 60.

Same here. I was about to brag about having 24 plants and 5 different varieties until I saw that.
Our first ones look to be about a week away. Can hardly wait for the BLTs and tomato and onion sandwiches.
Until then, it is endless amounts of cooked green beans with new red potatoes and bacon for this family.
