    blue ray questions

I saw a magnavox blue ray player today at walmart for $98. It was not capable of hooking to the internet. Is this a big deal? The kid said that there were special features that I would not be able to get, but he could explain what these special features are. It also had HDMI connections, which my older projection tv does not have. Is the quality that much worse without this? I did notice that all of Walmarts TVs were hooked up with the regular RCA jacks.

TV is a 1080 HD ready unit.

Does your TV have DVI at least?

The internet thing is no big deal at all.

    Re: blue ray questions

Some movies have extra features that need the internet, but i wouldn't worry about it. Also could be used for updates for future profiles. Neither should matter a whole lot.

I don't think so. I looked it up on the internet and I don't think I have anything like that. Need to find the TV owners manual.

I think it has the regular RCA jacks and an s-video cable. It is kind of dated, but still works good. Maybe in 5 years I will move up.

I think he was referring to how some of the BluRay players can access netflix or pandora when hooked up to the internet.

The special features that movies offer, atleast up to this point, are all retardedly stupid. One thing you might miss out on is firmware updates, which may or may not matter as you can usually do them through a flash drive or whatever.

HDMI would be nice. DVI is basically the same thing without the sound transferred on the cable. Component (The Red/Blue/Green plugs) would be next. Using Blu-Ray with Composite (Yellow/Red/White) is a waste, you'll get no advantage over a standard dvd-player.

If you only have RCA and svideo, you cannot do HD, so a bu ray player does you no good.

    Re: blue ray questions

Is the TV even HD capable.

If you have HDMI or DVI it will show bluray in 1080p-SOunds like you don't

If you have component on the TV and BR player the bluray discs will show up in either 720p or 1080i format. Normal DVD's will be in 480p on won't be upconverted.

    Okay:

I crawled behind there this morning and there are some red/blue/green jacks back there, but they look like standard RCA Jacks. Do these need special cables? They are labeled Y, Pb and Pr, plus it looks like there are a couple audio jacks too.

Those are component, and are capable of HD.

Is the TV HD? What make/model is it?

the TV is HD ready, which I think means that it can get an HD signal but does not have an HD tuner. It is an Akai 54 inch standard screen (not wide) 1080i HD ready monitor. Can't find the owners manual. I am sure there is a identification tag on the hidden on the back somewhere.

Then make sure the blu ray you get has component out so you can hook it to your tv.

    Re: blue ray questions

You may already know this but blu ray disks are EXPENSIVE. The player is small potatoes compared to building your library. Is it worth it to you?
