Saying "dude" is more of a 30-something thing. I find myself saying it far too often - carry over from my youth.

Considering this used to be the Lousiana Purchase, and the city is called "Des Moines", I think that's proof enough of the French influence. No further evidence is needed...

The topic of conversation was how much French influence there was in Iowa. Imo, very little. Ft. Des Moines was names after the river which, as I understand it, was named by the French prior to America taking it over via purchase. Ft. Des Moines was simply named due to locality...it could of been names Ft. Saquathuwan if the river would have been named such.

And while Des Moines is the capitol it wasn't the original capitol due to any kind of French influence. The original capitol was Iowa City and when it burned the capitol was moved to Des Moines largely because it was a more centrally located population center.
