I was happy to see that Americans were most likely to try and speak the host countries language. I think Americans get a bad rap by a small percentage of clowns.

I know when we visited my sister in the Czech Republic when she was student teaching there in 2002, we tried using as much Czech as we could (which was very little). The only problem is, the Czech word for "thank you", if pronounced just slightly wrong, is the Czech word for "men's genitalia". As a result, the lady that was running the desk was usually giggling every time I said "thank you". Fortunately, she realized I was an American that was at least trying...
