Advice Needed

My son is entering his senior year of high school and has really good (write your own ticket really good) SAT and ACT scores. Schools from around the country are emailing him about attending their institution. Today, our inbox has an email from the school in Iowa City asking him if they can send him more information.

My options are: 1 - send back a note saying no thank you, 2 - send back a note saying yes and have them burn postage (no way in heck he is going there), 3 send them back a note saying the U of I will not be a destination for my son as we appreciate little things like LAWS and football coaches who do not think their team members are above the law, 4 - send back a note saying the Hawks suck and there is no way he is attending.

What say the collective wisdom known as CF?

I'd go with a combination of the 4

It's his education and his future... shouldn't it be his decision?

Oh wait - trivial affiliations with sports teams trumps silly logic like that. Forgot. Sorry. My bad! Carry on.

I say you play along with them for as long as it takes, letting them think he's considering it, just to pull the rug out from under them last minute.

I consider it a concerned parent taking an active part in his child's future.

As for the options, any with the exception of #2. It's still a taxpayer funded institution, after all... :cool:

Maybe you could let your son do whatever he wants. If he scores out as well as you're implying he does, Iowa or Iowa State would probably be pretty low on the totem poll.

Is he interested in Iowa?

I might be going to the Henry Tippie school of business for my MBA. Nothing wrong with that. Well, if they let me in anyway.

I would never close any door to an institution that is expressing interest. There is no reason ever to burn any bridges when it comes to his future. Maybe he wants to go into Medicine after undergrad. I would hate to think that on file would be some letter that was writen out of dislike for another school's football program. As a guy with a wife that was more than our share in school debt still, no option for an education should be ignored. In my opinion.

Good luck, and I hope he know how proud you are of his accoplishments. It has to be a fun time for all of you right now.....

Fine, I'll call a spade a spade - that's a pretty dumb outlook. I have 2 girls, one of whom turns 2 next month. If, when the time comes to make the decision on which college to attend, I couldn't give two ***** if either of them decided to go Iowa State.

It's their education, not mine.
