Shawn had already won a World Championship, Lolo was the favorite, but hadn't yet... I think they got pretty equal coverage leading up around here, Shawn won, Lolo didn't....

When is the last time they asked HB about whether he misses seeing Obama around Iowa?
The only other time I've seen this kind of love fest has been with Kurt Warner but the difference was that he was an adult that wasn't in high school.
I almost forgot about Zach Johnson. That coverage went a little overboard for a while but didn't last that long. This coverage seems like it will never end.

Besides, LoLo is spending her time competing -- set the fastest time in the 100 hurdles in Greece this past weekend. She is, as I type this, in England getting ready for another race. This is how she earns her money. She has her agents. Johnson has her agents. Relax.
And how can anyone who laughs like a chipmunk be all bad?
Am I tired of Shawn Johnson. No. Do I dislike her because she appears to be an Iowa fan? No. You people who are obsessed with this young girl and the amount of media coverage she is getting need to put the Playstation down for a little while and come out of the basement.

Re: SHAWN JOHNSON
As far as the Lolo lost argument. I think she actually received more press because of the way she lost than if she would have won. I find her story a lot more interesting. I think the main reason you don't see Lolo on TV is because she's not doing the hollywood thing.

Re: SHAWN JOHNSON
I don't think it's a Shawn Johnson problem. I think it's an Iowa media problem. Anytime someone from Iowa does something great we have to hear about it forever! the media latches onto things and takes it way too far. Maybe because we don't have any professoinal sports teams or something, don't know.
I have a couple co-workers who are from out of state and they are amazed at how the Iowa media keeps talking about Iowa "celebrities" and drags it on for months and months. I'm a little embarrassed to be honest.
I read an article in the Register on Sunday about the moon landing and it bragged about how the radio on the shuttle was made in Iowa. Good lord people, now we are bragging about a radio made in Iowa!!

Good lord people, now we are bragging about a radio made in Iowa!! I agree with your comments, generally. I think the Des Moines Register in particular is guilty, but in part they are playing to their readership. Rockwell Collins deserves credit, and mention about their communications. But for some huge event, the big story isn't always or even often, the Iowa angle - which the Iowa media seem always to go out of their way to look for, and publicize to a greater degree than necessary.
I have nothing against Shawn Johnson, and she seems to be a pretty good person and representative of the state. But like others here, perhaps my opinion would be different if I lived there and similarly 'enjoyed' saturation coverage.

Re: SHAWN JOHNSON
Lolo was never going to get as much coverage given their different sports. Let's be honest here. Which can you name more of both past and present -- female hurdlers or female gymnists. I'm guessing it isn't even close. America has alway given more attention to gymnastics. I don't know why this is suddenly lost on people when it is broken down at a local level between two athletes in these two different sports.
BTW...Shawn is on The Champ right now.

Re: SHAWN JOHNSON
So...for the dbags that thought this thread was nonsense....think again!
Shawn Johnson is over-rated and over-exposed - enough said. And if you disagree with me, then you are obviosly disagreeing with the majority of the people on this thread.
She has talent - yes she does. I will give her that but when she is not the shinning star in the media, she isnt Iowa's sweet golden girl that all of you Shawn Johnson ask kissers say she is!
And that is why I started this thread...annnnnnd it looks like Im not the only who thinks this.....best female olympic athlete...NO WAY it was SJ!

Re: SHAWN JOHNSON
Ha Ha! No way dude...i think the only person that would ask her to prom would be some obsessed crazy kids mom that iis in LOVE with here!
She is both......everyone (probably including yourself) thinks that she should win anything she competes in! Why?..... because shes Shawn Johnson! Best dancer on DWTS....NO but she still won.....explain that one?
Everyone thinks that she is the best thing that has happened to Iowa.....hahah no way!
Cael Sanderson.....Ed Thomas.....Kurt Warner.....LoLo Jones....just to name a few
