I think the whole thing with The Ring was the fact that you got that image of Katie in the closet burned into your mind.

But then again, I've worked on worse... The rumor I heard was Stephen King actually preferred the remake over the original. More honest I guess to the book.

Totally agree with the above. The 1st Freddy movie scared the eff out of me. I was in grade school....some of my buddies found it and popped it in......man, I was not ready for that crap- I too had nightmares for years.
Saw was very very disturbing too.
I also remember my uncle babysitting me and my older brother one time........when I was a real-real little guy.....and he put on Psycho. Well, me and my brother snuck in to catch a bit of the movie after he put us to bed......and the freaking shower scene happened. I freaked.....really scared my uncle in doing so too........and at the same time....my parents walked back in just in time to see the event unfold....
Freaking comedy now that I think back. My mom let my uncle have it. ha ha.

Re: Scariest movie you've ever seen
I grew up on a remote farm, and there were definitely things in The Strangers that brought back some scary memories.
In Cold Blood (the book) scared the hell out of me when I was a kid, but the movie wasn't as disturbing.
I'll add Funny Games to the list. It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.
The original When A Stranger Calls was probably the movie that scared me the most growing up. With Amityville Horror being a close second.

Could be partially true, but I'm guessing it might also have something to do with the fact that HE wrote the screenplay for the remake, while Kubrick adapted the screenplay for the original.
The new one may have had potential, based on the the screenplay itself, but it was a low-budget production all the way around.
Plus, when you compare the way Kubrick makes a movie to the Mick Garris does it, there's a pretty wide gap in quality.
Not to disparage Garris' near-award-winning works like Critters 2 & Psycho IV .... -

Shaun of the Dead. End thread.
Seriously, I haven't seen too many horror movies that have really unnerved me (I see through most of them like cheap Saran wrap), and I'm not going to add much to the discussion that hasn't already been addressed, but at least I did like watching The Ring, Saw (the original one only), and Final Destination (the original one only).
