Anyone have any suggestions for what has/hasn't worked.
Garage is very cluttered right now and we have some small shelves in the front and that is it. Nothing major like bikes or kayaks to hang, just lots of "stuff". Also plan on putting on an epoxy floor.
I don't know how much you want to spend and I did mine in stages so it wouldn't sting so bad. I went with the gladiator brand wall and then add accessories. I also bought a workbench kit. See pics.
I got rid of the container on the floor since this picture.

What kind of cost are we talking about for the front part- wall/cupboard.

I got most of my stuff at Sears when they were having sales. I bought some of the wallboard stuff from a garage place that was going out of business.
The kit for the workbench was $99 from Amazon plus the cost of wood.
The gear wall itself was on sale for $70 for a 2 pack, which is 8 feet long. I believe the top picture with the cabinets on it is 4 pieces.
The little accessories that fit on the wall are pretty cheap. The cabinets are expensive but very well made and just slide right onto the wall.
I would agree that Gladiator is the way to go. Been working on my garage this summer. My goal was to get all the "stuff" off the floor. Still a work in progress and still plan to do the floor. I was able to find some really nice kitchen cabinets from someone that was remodeling their kitchen. Work really well. The Gladiator Fridge is awesome as well. Fridge is on top and the freezer is on the bottom. The ceiling is very tall in the garage so I built a shelf across the top of the garage door. Hold alot of "stuff"! The one wall has the gladiator wall across the whole side up 9 ft. It works really well. My back nook has cabinets as well but still needs to get finished with insulation and drywall. Overall I probably have about $1300 in it (Doesn't include fridge)
I also did this above one of the garage doors. It's not pretty but I just used a bunch of extra wood/drywall that I had laying around. It works good for items that I don't use a lot.

I made my own cabinets, but they still are not organized.
If it's got a hole it belongs on pegboard!

I did peg board. It is cheap. The only thing is you need to space it out from the wall so there is room for your hooks and holders. I just use a ripped 1 x 4 to build a frame and some center supports and then attach it to the wall. I have nearly all my shop tools on peg board. Works well.
The shelves up above the garage doors work well too. You can put stuff you don't use very often up there.
I also love pegboard. The people who owned the house left some behind and it works great. While the some of the pictures above look great, the garage is something that I won't spend a lot of money on. My situation is a little unique but there was a useless little piece of deck in my backyard that I ripped out an used the wood for a tall workbench and shelving in our storage room (free). I also went to lowes and bought "L" braces and 2X4's to make:
3 - 1.5' x 8' shelves
1 - 1.5' x 10' shelf
1 - 1.5' x 5' shelf
5 - 1' x 3' shelves in a verticle row between my garages
All shelves are off the ground and on the wall. Cost was around $80 and it was pretty easy. My advice is to get as much as you can off the ground so you can open car doors and move mowers freely.
I also love the peg board.
If your garage isn't finished you can utilize the rafters for storage, that's what I do.
