ISU/Iowa all day tailgate in the classroom
Looking for advice from other teachers. My wife wants to have an all day ISU-Iowa tailgate for her 4th graders next Friday. She is looking for fun ideas the kids could do that relate to the classroom as well as the rivalry. Just checking to see what other teachers have done. Thanks in advance.
Re: ISU/Iowa all day tailgate in the classroom
What about history of famous alumn or faculty? Carver and van Allen? Or the history of Nr Trice or Kinnick?

Keg of beer?
Ok, how about root beer?

Whatever you do, don't bring the cardinal and gold bud light...
Re: ISU/Iowa all day tailgate in the classroom
Great idea! I'd definitely go with the famous alum thing and also maybe talk about the history of the football teams. Showing the youtube clips of the 2002 game would be a nice touch also.

Definately do the Kinnick and Trice thing. Great idea Chipper. General history of the rivalry. The fact that recently the Hawks aren't getting it done against us. The 2002 season and how we ruined it for the Hawks. Stuff like that. Slnt it incredibly toward us.

No kegs allowed at tailgates, not even root beer. Sorry

I was skeptical at first, but this sounds like a great idea. This could be used as a way to teach some very interesting local history. The respective schools probably would have useful information available on famous alumni/faculty if you contacted them and let them know your wife's plan.
Re: ISU/Iowa all day tailgate in the classroom
To teach the kids about some of the greatest second half comebacks in Kinnick Stadium history, you could watch a video of the 2002 Iowa State-Iowa game. Then for fair and balanced time for the hawks, you could watch an episode of COPS. Oh, and don't forget the root beer bong.

how about some dodge ball hawks vs clones!

Geography: have an Iowa map and locate ISU and Iowa, and her school. Anyone from her district play for either school? (Now or in the past?) Ask past players to send a note about their best memory of the game -- appropriate for 4th graders.
Math: distance from school to each university, and from university to university. How long would it take to drive (legal limits) from one place to the other. Trivia: longest length of game between the two; highest total score; number of yards gained by each team in 2008 (try converting to meters); height of the press box; number of reporters allowed in the press box.
English/literacy: Write a thank you note to any players who responded to request above and provided info.
Science/health: training and conditioning exercises--do some easy sample moves and learn why they're important, perhaps include the p.e. teacher for leading them. What's a typical pregame routine and meal? Learn why good nutrition and rest are important.
Have fun. Kids who don't know football or care about the teams should still be able to have an interesting and unusual day, while actually learning some things.
