any of you guys pay attention to it? Games in Iowa are played on Tuesdays also. I went to Dowling where the focus was on football so I never got to see what it was like to be at a school where it was the main event.

Another question: why does it seem the christian schools
(by that i mean religious schools that aren't catholic) always seem to be good in basketball?

Pella Christian, Unity Christian, Western Christian, and DM Christian all seem to have something going for them.

Because they can recruit better and easier than other schools.

that is true, but Dowling can also recruit better and easier and they've never been a basketball school.

Most of these schools, IIRC did not have football until a short time ago. Basketball was/is THE sport at those schools.

I would agree that football has gotten more notoriety over the years but Dowling basketball has been pretty good in the past. In the late 70s early 80s Dowling was really good. They made several state tourneys and finished 2nd at least once and won a state championship. From 2001-2006 Dowling won 75% of their games and they made the state tourney twice. However, since that coach was let go in 2007 they are 9 games under .500.

Recruiting has been mentioned, and that is part of it, but there is more. Most Christian schools have organized basketball starting as early as the 4th grade. At the school I went to, (25 years ago) in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade we were playing over 20 games per year compared to the public schools who were only playing 10. There were a couple of out of town double elimination tournaments included as well. In addition, due to low numbers and cost, we played flag football rather than tackle. Basketball was just a bigger deal.

I know of several church schools who didn't have High Schools have players went on to star at their respective public schools. Skillwise, they were better developed.

90% of the "recruiting" stories are complete ******* bull ****. The difference in a lot of cases is the fact that the guys I played basketball with were my teammates from 5th grade on. Same with St. Ed's. Played well together, knew everybody's strengths and weaknesses, knew where everybody was at on the floor and where they were going. The stuff you can't teach.

+1. MOST of the private schools in Iowa do not recruit. Not sure about Des Moines schools, but I know that schools such as Western and Unity do not extensively recruit. When they won the state championship those kids have been playing with each other for years.

Dowling has strict rules in place about recruiting. Kids come there because they want to get a great education and play for a winner.
Coaches are forbidden from making first contact. So if a player contacts Dowling, he obviously doesn't like where he's at.

Its been about 1 player a year for the last several years.
