First LCD - video issues?

So I just bought a 47" LCD and though we're enjoying it we're noticing a odd sort of scrolling look to the picture ... on DVD movies in particular, but on standard cable as well.

Is this something that has to do with LCD/HD technology? It's a 1080i 120Hz Sharp. Maybe we're just not used to the size (thats what she said) or the high def.

I haven't found a menu feature that sounds like it would change things ... any suggestions / comments?

Are you talking about when the camera pans from side to side?

Does it move like the view screen on a camcorder? If so, that's the 120Hz. It can look odd to the eye when objects move across the screen quickly.

check avsforum.com, display devices forum for your specific tv. You should be able to learn everything you could ever dream of wanting to know about it there!

Do you have any specific stretch options going for DVD's, it could be the tv trying to fill the screen space for the zoom you have on vs. it showing in it's original aspect (OAR)

You get used to it fairly quick.

It's not a bad thing necessarily, it's a different thing. Personally, I love it. Everything looks so fluid. Pixar movies are amazing. Some people hate it.

If it bothers you, I'm sure there's a way to turn it off.

It's not the 120 HZ, it's the de-judder feature so frequently included on 120 Hz sets. It's why i have a Plasma. I absolutely hate the "soap opera" look of that LCD feature. If we are talking about the same thing, that is.

Try turning the dejudder feature off. Each brand has a different name for it. Once again, I may be completely off on my memory of what feature causes it. I'm 99% sure that the 120 Hz isn't the culprit.

Adaptive Contrast (On)
DCR (On)
SMP (Mid)

SMP ... Smart Motion Plus had High, Mid, Low, and Off ... Off did the trick.

The 120 Hz capability refers to the refresh rate of the LCD screen, standard is 60 Hz. There are few actual 120 Hz sources so the displays are capable of interpolating and displaying an intermediate imagine between those being fed by the source.

If the image order is: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

At 120 Hz the images displayed are: 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, etc.

Maybe dejudder is what that interpolating process is called?

240 Hz displays are becoming more common now, and either it was a typo or I saw one listed wit 600 Hz somewhere on Black Friday. As with all forms of image processing, some brands do a better job than others.

That's exactly the feature i was speaking of. Each brand has it's own name for it and slightly different technology to achieve the result. I think it looks like crap. At least in the earlier versions of the technology. It's a frame interpolation technology IIRC. Turn it off and you still have 120 Hz. You might try the Low setting. I know High is unwatchable for most.

I think Plasma are 600 hz in response to the other poster.

I do know the 600 Hz refers the plasma technology only. Different inherant technology, so its not on the same scale as the LCDs.

Correct. Plasmas don't have/need smooth motion features but 600Hz on plasma doesn't mean the exact same as 600 Hz LCD.
