New Shafts for Golf Clubs

For the off-season, I'm considering re-shafting my Driver and Fairway clubs.

What is the typical shaft weight for an average golfer?

I never paid attention to the Shaft Weight, but it was suggested mine are too light.

Swing Speed: 94 mph.
Handicap: 14
Weight: 175 lbs

Driver: Tour Burner, 60 grams. Stiff shaft. I was told this is too light
3&5 Fairway: 65 grams

Its probably not that light. Generally the light the shaft the faster swing speed you can have and with a heavier shaft you get more accuracy and less distance and vise versa. Youll be best to have your swing monitored to see what flex point would be best. I like the Aldila NV 65 shaft myself. For irons having the True Temper Dynamic Gold Steel shaft is the best by far. For the average golfer they are probably using 60 to 80 gram shaft weights but pros who have the strength may opt for a heavier and more accurate shaft.

I know it's lame, but it was "teed up" for me.

Who suggested that they are too light? Your swing speed isn't that fast. Your handicap would indicate that you would need a lighter shaft. I am not sure that you need a stiff flex. Best bet would be to have your swing analyzed, well worth the time and money.
True Temper Dynamic Gold Steel are good but so are the Rifle Precision also.

Thanks Wheels...if I can get more accuracy at the expense of distance, that'll be fine by me.

I did get it analyzed that's how I know my speed is 94, and I am on the border line of regular vs stiff. But my 5-fairway is reg flex and it is too whippy.

So I'm probably ok at 60-gram shaft weight? Thanks

One thing to be careful of is that stiff/regular flex of one company might not be the "same" stiff/regular of anothers. Weight is okay.

Golf is my only hobby and it is a long way to spring.

Didn't see that you are in Houston, so no need for you to worry about no golfing in the winter thing.

I don't know much about the actual shaft, but for grips, Winn-Grips are the way to go. My clubs have Winn-Grips and I love them.

I hate those winn grips. I am a fan of the same grip that many of the top professionals use which is the golf pride tour velvet.

Some of the responses were pretty good. The best thing is to get fitted by a pro with a launch monitor. They probably won't put you in a 75g shaft unless you tell them that accuracy is more important than distance. Some people have variable movement in their swing, a heavier shaft can reduce that, and help give a little more accuracy.

One thing that I have always recommended to customers in the past is to go 10g heavier on a 3 wood, or 5 wood shaft, than you have on your driver. So if you stay at 65g on your driver, you might check out the shaft on our FW and make sure they are in the 75g range.

If you go heavier on your driver shaft, be prepared to increase the weight of your FW.

If you are on the borderline id go with the stiff. As you said earlier you are more than ok giving up accuracy for distance and the stiff will help with the accuracy.

They are good grips. Wished they lasted a little longer then they do. They have really jumped in price. To have them put on is $8.50/club. That is for the mid-sized grips.

I do it myself and regrip my families and golfing buddies clubs. I bought a box of 100 and paid $5.62/grip tax included. 3 years ago those same grips cost about $3 each.

Really? I love them. They do wear out easily and are kind of expensive but I think it's worth it. I've never used the ones you mentioned but maybe I'll have to check it out.
