but why is WDM Valley mediocre in boys BB? When you consider they have five or six hundred kids in every class you would think they could get five guys on the field to produce. They used to be good in the 90s when Harris was there but have been in free fall since.
Its ironic how at Waukee the head coach played at Valley 15 years ago and how Harris is an assistant. I've heard that a lot of the kids don't go out because either they want to take a break from sports in the winter assuming they play other sports or because they don't want to play at all.

A lot of kids are split between football-baseball & football-track. Track and baseball practices start around Feb.-Mar. which is during the end of the basketball season, so I would think most of the athletes would take the winter off.
Re: i know this has already been discussed
I wonder why kids at Harlan don't feel the need to take the winter off? Or at 95% of the other schools in the state. Seems strange to me.

These are my thoughts also. A lot of those kids focus on one or two sports and it just happens to be that some of their better athletes focus on football, baseball, and track.
Re: i know this has already been discussed
Or it could be the fact that it doesn't take NEARLY the population to field a good basketball team as it does a football team. Therefore, smaller schools could be better than them making them look mediocre.
Re: i know this has already been discussed
I know a guy whose son is on the team. His take is:
1. They start the weed out process at a young age. By 8th grade, 9th at the latest, you have been either deemed worthy of being on the team or not. Although they don't cut per say at those ages they do have only so many jerseys, only so many spots on the summer league teams, etc. Late bloomers have no chance as they have been opted out early on.
2. Football is dominant at the school. The better an individual gets at football the more pressure they get to specialize on only football. Plus, football is the "cool" thing to do, basketball not so much.
3. Not everyone is a big fan of Coach Thornton.
In the old days (80's) when I went to Valley we were a very strong basketball team. Mike Born, Matt Bullard, Morgan Wheat etc. took us to numerous state tourney's and I think Valley won a title in 91 or 92.
Re: i know this has already been discussed
We went to back-to-back state title games when I was there in the 90s. It sounds like the parents are pushing the kids in to specializing waaaaay too early now. Sad.
Re: i know this has already been discussed
exactly, i have always been opposed to specializing. This isn't college athletics for god's sake,

Are you even allowed to start practice for track and baseball before basketball is over? Or are these just "Captains Practices"? I know we didn't start wrestling practice till after football was over and I was pretty sure it was against the rules to officially practice before a certain date.
