10 things not to buy in 2010
10-things-not-to-buy-in-2010: Personal Finance News from Yahoo! Finance
Some made me wonder, and some made sense
How many of you on here still have a landline? DVD's made sense once I saw it..but people still would like to own a movie or two. Newspaper subscriptions......we all knew that was on the wayside.
Your thoughts?

I haven't had a land line since 2001.

Zhu Zhu pets. Crappiest product ever. Bought one for each of my kids and both quit working before the new year.
Yes, I know it's not really relevant. Just wanted to rant.

I don't pay over $5 for a DVD and watch netflix streaming a lot. Although, they need to start offering newer and better movies on streaming video if they are going to make DVDs obsolete. This is the reason I won't transition to bluray (sp?).

Re: 10 things not to buy in 2010
We still have a landline. I'd love to get rid of it, but cell coverage is so spotty for us. Used to be with Verizon I'd have to go outside in my driveway to get a consistent signal. Now we've switched to AT&T, I haven't really tested it all that thoroughly.
External harddrives? And go Mozy? Personal preference - but that's a horrible idea. Why would I buy repeatedly what I can buy once. Not to mention you're at the mercy of that servce (connectivity, downtimes, potential security breaches, price changes).
Haven't bought a CD in quite a while.
No subscription to the Rag, no surprise there.
I don't really get the DVD one. Do people buy DVD's to only watch once? I buy it so I can watch whenever and as many times as I'd like. That one doesn't make much sense either.

I would rather own than rent movies (but that's just me)

Re: 10 things not to buy in 2010
External hard drives are a cheaper option because you pay a one time fee and that's it. Those internet places charge(starting off) +$50 a year. That list is pretty dumb overall. They make it sound like each and every thing is supposed to be an investment. DVD's and CD's will not make or break you. I do enjoy the last one though. Energy-inefficient homes and appliences. Really? It's not a good idea to purchase things that will cost you more money in the long-run? Damn. Should have known.

I suspect I will never read a book on a Kindle type reader. I love the feel and smell of an actual book. I either buy used books or get them from the library. I could never justify the cost of a reader let alone the cost to download a book. I never need more than 2 books at a time under any circumstances. It's an excess which I'll never have.

If I have a long article online I want to read I usually print that out too. I love a real newspaper, book, magazine in my hands.

Re: 10 things not to buy in 2010
I disagree with them somewhat on Hard drives and fuel efficient cars.
-Hard drives are a one time expense and are good for system backups. If you have a fire or something than yes you would lose your photo's/music. For those types of backups I just put my photo's on Google Web Albums and they charge me like $5/year if I go over a certain amount.
-Fuel efficient cars make sense but in most circumstances it's better to just buy a fuel efficient car rather than a Hybrid that they mention.
I agree with them on DVD's. I've never understood why people have 1,000's of DVD's. Only about 1% of the movies I watch I want to watch more than 1 time. For those 1% I will buy the DVD (blu-ray now).

Nobody has actually read War and Peace.
