haha, very true. It's amazing how far downhill spelling and grammar have gone in the last ten or so years.

I wonder if this has something to do with the increased usage of texting and online chatting. Most people will abbr. words and use the words incorrectly, leading to bad habits.

Most people will abbr. words and use the words incorrectly, leading to bad habits. I abbreviate words in text *when needed*. The thing is that a lot of kids are doing this without learning the fundamentals of English grammar/spelling first. I still write a lot of my texts out word for word, but if I want to get something across in one big message, I will abbreviate.
My parents are Grammar Nazis though, and I grew up having a grandfather who was a foreign languages/English professor. I'm going to take a guess this is why I am one too, but also the fact that communication (written, oral, or non-verbal) as a whole is one of the most important things. Everytime I read "ya man dats da thing u gotta do itz what u need dood," I die a little inside.

But, it seems like kids these days get cell phones in middle school or before and are always texting without proper grammer. In my case, I didn't have a cell phone until I got my driver's license. So, I already knew how to spell and use good grammar (mostly). Kids that text/chat before knowing the proper way to spell will develop bad habits.

I know it's "ar", but I still use "er" probably more times than not. When Prepared, Fear No One. -

I didn't even get mine until my first year of college...but yes, that's the problem. I always thought a great idea for typing too would be to rig an instant messenger up and have them spell correctly with it somehow with their friends. Seriously, there are two ways I learned to type well and I never took a typing class. (1) From typing on AOL Instant messenger back in the 90s so damn much and (2) starting computer programming back in the day.

All middle school kids should attend the National Grammar Rodeo in Canada.
