We just returned from a Caribbean cruise, and more than one guide told us that many of the islands down there are still recovering from hurricane damage from recent years. There's simply not a lot of money available to rebuild with. Haiti is about as poor as countries get, so the impact from this will be felt for many years to come.
Thoughts and prayers to these people, and here's hoping that the highest casualty estimates are way too high.
Yes, it's amazing that the Dominican Republic didn't seem to suffer any damage -amazing! Too bad Port Au Prince was leveled like it was. It's horrible! I hope they get enough help from the international community that they can re-build and increase their standard of living eventually.
