Jesse Smith
In P.E. today we got a student-teacher, and the student-teacher was Jesse Smith. This should be awesome. (Oh I almost forgot, I had Todd Miller once as a P.E. sub that was cool)

I hope he doesn't try to hit any kids coming off the school bus.

Re: Jesse Smith
I think I was in 8th grade so it would have been 1969 but we had Duane Josephson as a student teacher in P.E. He was the catcher for the Chicago White Sox at the time. He was only there a few weeks because of spring training but it was cool while it lasted.

It's hard to believe, but there was a time when MLB players had to have a job in the off-season to pay the bills. A kid from my hometown was an above average AAA pitcher who spent a couple weeks in the show. He retired in the mid-seventies when he was 25 because he could not survive on the $10,000 contract that he was offered. He took a job for more money in a packing house. Times have certainly changed.

No kidding times have changed. In those days you could make good money working in a packing house.

I think Bobby Scales for the I-Cubs is a substitute teacher during the season to make extra cash. Even today, if you don't get a big bonus it's very hard to get by on minor league pay. $600-1200/mo for 7 months doesn't quite pay the bills.

When I was a senior in high school, Matt Blair was the driver's ed teacher at Gilbert. I was very disappointed to learn that since I already had my license I could not take driver's ed again! I was so envious of the sophomore class!

If so that would eat right into your pay pretty fast.
