Renting movies in Ames
My wife and I were regular renters at Hastings prior to its closing. Since then we tried Hollywood Video which we have not been to in years. We were informed that they no longer stock new releases and are now in the business of selling or renting old movies and games. That was a WTH moment.
Of course we are aware of netflix but prefer to rent "in person". Is Family Video the only option left in town?

All things flow according to the whims of the great magnet. "You know, that might be the answer - to act boastfully about something we ought to be ashamed of. That's a trick that never seems to fail." -
Re: Renting movies in Ames
Is that one on Lincoln Way only adult movies? I've never been in there, only went to Family Video when I was in school.

Unless you want to do the redbox or hy-vee, it looks like family video is all that we have left

Have you tried Red Box? I'm still amazed at the people who haven't used them yet. They are available at many locations around town. You just go up to the "red box", choose your movie, and swipe your debit card. Movies are 1 dollar per day w/ no late fees. The only drawback I see is that sometimes they are out of new releases. That issue can be remedied by visiting their website to see which box has the movie you want. I can't imagine there being a brick and mortar movie store in 10yrs.

The main problem with Redbox, at least in Ames, is the selection is very limited and frankly poor. I have looked at their website and was unimpressed with the choices.

I hope they soon start having Blu Ray

The only advantage a traditional store still has is being able to walk around and browse. If I don't have a specific movie in mind, I don't want to sit outside a McDonald's scrolling through the new releases trying to pick a movie. Especially when it's cold out.

Re: Renting movies in Ames
When I first saw redbox, I thought it would never go over. Now its all I use. I love the fact I can go online too and see what redboxes in town have the movie I want, and I can reserve it up to two days ahead of time...ok now I sound like a commercial.

Re: Renting movies in Ames
Also, the new fareway has something very similar to redbox.
