    Virus/Spyware problem

I recently got some sort of virus or spyware on my computuer. The first time I click on a search engine result I am redirected to a different site. I have tried multiple free spyware and virus removal applications. These failed to fix the problem. I have also done a system restore and it did not change any thing.

    Any advice.

    Give this a try...

Microsoft Security | Computer Security | Malicious Software

    Install Security Essentials.

Also search on Cnet.com for removal tools.

Bears, the best advice I have for you is to never, ever click on any link without knowing in advance exactly where it is taking you. Download and run the free AVG antivirus program. Take all the freebies AVG offers. AVG works and will not fill your computer with more junk.

    Re: Virus/Spyware problem

Two legit programs that we use in my lab for spyware infection removal:

    1. The questionable sounding, but legit SuperAntiSpyware
    2. MalwareBytes AntiMalware

Microsoft Security Essentials, mentioned above, has shown that it missed quite a bit that these other two programs detect and remove. Use it if you'd like, but that has been my experience.

Often times the spyware programs on your machine cloak themselves from being detected by the removal utilities. After installing the antispyware programs, reboot into safe mode (after the initial startup screen, before the Windows loading screen, press F8 repeatedly and choose safe mode when prompted) and run full scans of each from safe mode.

There is no sure way to remove every spyware infection, so do as many scans as you can until they come back completely clean and cross your fingers.

    Re: Virus/Spyware problem

I was having problems a couple weeks ago and downloaded and ran Malware Bytes and Spybot Search and Destroy (both free via Cnet.com - downloads). That took care of all the problems I was having.
