I lived on the very west side of the complex. So maybe the east side is better. I think there was probably 8 buildings out there atleast.

Re: Apartments in Ames
I've had positive experiences renting houses most of the years. I prefer yards and a basement anyway so that's a bonus.
Best house I lived at was on Ellis St. just a block west and north of Thumbs.

Tiny rooms, horrible build quality, elevators that didn't work, noisy, high utility bills (we had to run our AC in the winter even with the doors to the balcony open), noisy, no parking. Great place to party though if you didn't live there. We had a massive living room though. 3 couches, a bar, and still had lots of floor space.
For the first two months we lived there we couldn't figure out why the upstairs rooms had no vents and then we discovered that they had carpeted over the vents and didn't put registers in them. Also the people in the unit next to us managed to set a couch on fire one night at about 3 AM. That was exciting.
Best placed we lived was a University West apartment on Pinon Dr. in West Ames. Just 3 of us at the time, but definitely the nicest place. Inly spent 6 months there though.

Just curious to hear if anyone on here has lived there or could share some insight as to where the best places to rent are.
I thought the 4 bed 3 bath apts. at U West were way to expensive
4 bed 2 bath at West Towne were around $300/month
4 bed 2 bath at U Plains were only $279/month
Nothing includes utilites
Right now we are thinking University Plains
Thoughts? Stories? I live in Fieldstone Grande currently, I am NOT living here next year. I will be moving closer to campus, closer to the action. Awesome place with a fireplace and a bunch of ammenities but if you are a drinker and party on the weekends it is such a liability to live out here. So many times I have driven back, woke up the next morning and said, "why the EFF did I drive last night? I am an idiot!" I am just trying to ride out the rest of the year without doing something stupid again. Plus when you want to hang out with the ladies, they never want to venture out to your place. Neither do your friends for that matter, always having to go to their places all the time and using way more gas than I ever would living on campus.
Also if you're not a fan of taking the bus like me, then you have to drive to the commuter lot and take the orange route every morning, usually takes a good 35 minutes total to get to class. Or you have to drive to a side-street, find a spot, then walk to class. Or you can also park in the 10-hr parking by Cyclone Plaza. Lastly, it is kind of reminiscent of high school when you drive to school.
I am planning on living where my brother did his senior year, right across from Howe Hall on Sheldon.

Re: Apartments in Ames
I don't think I will mind taking the bus, but the distance from campus does concern me. Would you highly recomend living on campus for the parties? Im a little concerned nothing will be going on off of campus.. at West Towne, Fieldstone, U West/Plains..

Re: Apartments in Ames
Basically anywhere in Ames no matter who you rent with you can just expect to pay an extra month's rent in deposit, which you will most likely not get back with anyone you rent with its ridiculous.

No. You can get pretty much anywhere riding the Moonlight Shuttle or the regular bus, the only thing we've found that isn't the greatest is the last moonlight bu goes out here at like 2:30 so you have to be ready to go by then or you have no way home.

So, just to clarify, you suggest living off campus to save money on rent and just commute everyday. Opposed to finding a spot downtown and paying more money.

The problem is, you are not always going to catch the bus. Let's face it, things happen when you're drunk, you may "plan" on the bus but things always change after you have had a few. Have any of you made bad decisions by driving home just at the thought of your own bed? I know have... all the time, it happens and living in West Ames does not help.
I am not a fan of the bus, because I don't like the idea of being there at the exact time every morning, b/c if you miss it you then have to wait 20 more minutes for the next one. By the time you get to class (extremely late), you look like an idiot and you miss most of the class to the point where it wasn't even worth going.

Re: Apartments in Ames
If you have 4 people rent a house. So much funner.

I've only lived here in West Ames and Freddy Court so I don't have too much to judge on but we all really like living here and it is very much worth the distance. I hardly notice it anymore.
