I tried the 20 doller trick at the Luxor last memorial day. Me and my buddies got rejected, the guy said something about a busy weekend even though we got there on the monday.
I think it all depends on who you go up to to check in...

If you going in August go to the West Coast of Mexico Cabo/Puerto Vallarta. August is Hurricane season and thats the last thing you want to deal with just before your wedding.

The chances are slim of actually being there during a hurricane and it's much cheaper. It's worth the risk.
