I-35 Ames to Des Moines
Heading to Des Moines shortly. Anyone been on this stretch lately? What are the road conditons? I know there is no precip. but I've heard blowing snow has caused problems.

Re: I-35 Ames to Des Moines
I took it at 6 and my fiance' drove it at 7ish both were able to go 70+ with no problems.
We were both going north from DM to Ames though.

Re: I-35 Ames to Des Moines
The usual places are blowing, mainly between Huxley and the north side of Ankeny. Just slow up a bit when you see it because everyone else will. West Bound lane on 30 just East of Duff had a roll over accident this afternoon where it was kinda bad from the wind.

Re: I-35 Ames to Des Moines
If anyone is in the northern part of Iowa, I drove from Ames to Cherokee and HWY 3 was brutal for blowing snow and visibility. Be safe if anyone is out there.

Re: I-35 Ames to Des Moines
Well the lady on the radio earlier said there was blowing snow on I-35 and ice on I-80 north of Ames.
So watchout, the roads are changing places...

Re: I-35 Ames to Des Moines
I drove from Dsm to Ames between 5:30 and 6:30 and there were a few nasty spots of black ice. Problem was they sneak up on you when you're clipping along at 70. Then you hit these ice patches. I saw one pickup truck on it's side.

So watchout, the roads are changing places... That doesn't even make sense. Did you mean East/West on I80? Or Highway 30?

Re: I-35 Ames to Des Moines
My point was that the weather lady said it wrong....hadn't really been paying attention to the radio, but hearing that I-80 was north of Ames got my interest -

Re: I-35 Ames to Des Moines
Not weather related, but yesterday I drove on highway 30 between Ames and Boone for probably the first time since last may. That stretch of road is in a state of disrepair to say the least. About every 15 feet there is a bump in that road. If I were a lady that might make for an enjoyable ride, but since I am not I really didn't find it much fun. I can only imagine what it would be like for someoone in a big truck, say an unloaded dump truck, to drive over that. I would think they'd be throwing up. The DOT really screwed the pooch on that one, roads should never get that bad.

You are right; people in Boone have been complaining about this stretch for months, well before this blasted winter made a bad road even worse.

Re: I-35 Ames to Des Moines
This winter has been brutal on roads. I was reading an article that discussed Polk County was doing an analysis on whether or not it was even cost effective to patch potholes until spring time. If I recall correctly, the costs to replace a pothole are not worth it when the patches only last for about 7-10 days because of the weather.
