And La Fuente wins!! Probably would have tasted better if they had new paint though.

If he's anything like me with mexican food he probably just rented and returned the food after 45 minutes.

I always found the food at El Azteca to be really average. My vote goes to La Fuente. Cazador was ok, imo, but taste-wise, La Fuente is way ahead of any of the others.

    Re: Cazador or La Fuente

Well I suppose it is moot now, but I really don't get all the love for La Fuente.

I lived across the street from there for a year and the service was consistently terrible!! The food was ok, but the service was HORRIBLE. I haven't been back in five years after we reserved their "party room" for a friends 21st birthday and we showed up and they had completely forgotten to set anything up so they just shoved a bunch of tables together in front of the bar instead. Service was terrible all night, half of us didn't get silverware or water. They mixed up/forgot all our orders and the one person in the restaurant who knew how to use the credit card machine was too busy flirting with the waiters to get us or anyone else in the place checked out. Oh, and to top it off the male waiters creeped out all the females in the party by hitting on them and talking about them lewdly in spanish (we had several spanish speakers with us). Completely unprofessional.

I've never had anything but good experience with El Azteca since they first opened up on Dayton. Can't wait to have a new location closer to home. Steak Chimichanga is my favorite.

    I've thought that before too.
On the other side: Everytime I go into Azteca the owner, wife, or son seem to be there so I think the waiters seem to act a little better there, more professional.

I've seen this there before too, and probably my only complaint with the place. Probably my only complaint with La Fuente. I've never had poor service there, or any other Mexican place in Ames for that matter.

After moving West Liberty, I will never go to another mexican restaurant in the state again.

El Patio= best torta in Iowa.

But since I don't really drink, we don't go there often.

That's a place I need to try. I know it's not in Ames, but Dos Rios has grown on me. I've been there a handful of times, and I thought it was overrated the first time I was there, but every consecutive time I've been there, I liked it a little more.

El Azteca > La Fuente and it's not even close.

I found El Patio just off Ingersoll in DM in 1966, when the Mexican family still owned the restaurant, and Brooke just work there. Gramma in the then back dining room, sat, deboning chicken for use in the kitchen. Good food then and still has good food.

I used to bring my sales staff from all over the bordering states for a meeting and we went to El Patio for a meal there every other month as we all loved good Mexican food.

It was at one time listed, before all the trendy ones showed up, as the best Mexican restaurant in DM as El Azteca is in Ames. Still consider it very good overall.

El Azteca is by far the best. Cazador is ok and La Fuente is just plain dirty.

    Re: Cazador or La Fuente

Cazador is junk, lets not even bring that place up again. To me, El Azteca and La Fuente are basically the same. Menu's basically the same, food's very similar, it just comes down to preference.
