I've seen that there are 2 options in the 360 aisle:
1) 360 wireless adapter
2) Wireless router
Would the wireless Madcatz router work for this, or would I have the same problem with the connection, since it's basically just a middle-man router in the system?

Whenever I did what you are trying, I always connected the computer then plugged the Xbox in before turning the box on.

Re: Xbox 360 connection
Erik - try testing the connection in the network settings through the xbox ... I'm away from my xbox so I'm not much help right now ... Maybe later ...

One is to wire through the computer. After resetting the 360, it still isn't recognizing that connection.
Another was to use my linksys router, no longer needed for DSL, cable the 360 into that, and have it connect to the provided wireless access point. I couldn't get that Internet connection to connect.
A third is to bite the bullet and buy either the 360 wireless adapter thing or that Madcatz gaming router I saw in the Best Buy aisle right next to the other adapter. My gut tells me pretty strongly that I'd have to buy the $100 Microsoft thing but I really don't want to spend much on this.

It's too bad 360's don't have wireless capabilities built in like ps3's

Re: Xbox 360 connection
Tried resetting the computer, but the 360-computer connection still isn't doing anything. Since that's the computer I'm using for the Internet, I'm pretty sure I'd be sailing along if the 360 and computer would connect.

Re: Xbox 360 connection
If you can not get the bridging to work I would definitely go with the microsoft adapter, wireless N of course. Whenever i have bought madcatz peripherals they have been more of a pain in the *** than what I paid for them. Nothing is worse than a laggy MW2 game

Re: Xbox 360 connection
You'll have to call mediacom themselves to get them to allow your 360 to connect. It's just like you have to individually sign up each computer to use the internet at your place. They should walk you through it and tell you what the ID number is that they need off of your x-box, but until you register your 360 with them it won't work. I had to do this at an apartment of mine a while ago, and I would assume it's still the same.

Re: Xbox 360 connection
I thought I'd get creative. Figured--why not wire the 360 and the laptop into the Linksys router? Then I could try bridging that connection to the Internet over the laptop's wireless.
but when I do that, for some reason the laptop is losing it's connection to the Internet..
