Netflix Streaming

I got a blu-ray player with Netflix streaming capability a couple weeks ago and I am less than impressed with Netflix. The selection just sucks, hardly any of their movies are available to stream. I'm thinking of cancelling Netflix and just paying $2.99 per movie from Amazon.com. At least there you can get new releases.

Has anyone heard if Netflix is going to expand their streaming library in the future?

I have the streaming also. But before I had it I was already paying $7 per month for starz. ANd the netflix streaming includes all movies that I would currently get with starz on demand. So I canceled that and for the extra few bucks a month I think it is a good deal.

It actually has gotten somewhat better. Unfortunately, I don't see new releases coming for a while. With the frequency that people could watch movies streamed at $10 / month, the movie industry would lose a lot of money in DVD sales. I think that the Netflix model will eventually fade out to pay per movie stream or download with DRM type of thing. It's the only way the movie industry can make up for the lost revenue of DVD sales.

Hope you weren't expecting to stream new releases. If that was the case you wouldn't even need Netflix to send you a movie.

I think one of the main objectives for streaming is for tv shows. You can stream a ton of tv series season by season through there. Sure beats watching four episodes and then waiting two days for the next four etc etc.

The selection available streaming is lacking, however as cytech said it's on par with a Starz or Encore movie channel. I stream through my PS3, and noticed that I'm better of searching Netflix.com instead of the PS3 tool for streaming options.

There are actually more movies available through the website than the streaming function on PS3. I am assuming that your blu-ray player works similar to the PS3, where you have to scroll through categories of movies with no search function? What I do is search on my computer first and put anything I want to watch in my watch queue. Then I can access it from by ps3 even if I can't find it in their categories.

Also, I wouldn't pay for netflix streaming on its own. I like that I get it though as part of my netflix package.

I love the streaming as you can watch a lot of TV Series's like Dexter, Weeds, the tudors and Californication w/out ordering Showtime...That's basically what i use it for...

I like the streaming service for kids' movies more than anything. Sometimes Mom & Dad need an hour of quiet time, and being able to queue up a kid flick on-demand is nice. Definitely worth the $$ for me, but not everyone's situation is the same.

I absolutely love the streaming. It makes it so having 1 DVD at a time service bearable. I can always find a movie to stream that is on my I-Can't-Believe-I-Haven't-Seen-This-Yet list or a movie that I don't own but love.

As a partial thread hijack, for those streaming through Blu-Ray players, which ones have worked best? (Do you connect via wired or Wi-Fi?)

agreed...you gotta think of the streaming as a add on to the disc delivery service.

With that said. Netflix is already in a fight with the studios over their model. They recently conceded on having new releases pushed back from the delivery service in exchange for more movies available for streaming.

It's a slippery slope for them they need to be careful on.

With my blu-ray player you can only access movies you have selected online and placed in your instant cue. That said, the movies available to add instantly suck. Nothing even remotely new and really it appears their lower-rated movies are the only ones they make available to stream. I tried what someone else said, saying OK maybe it still has some benefit for watching TV shows. So I put a couple seasons in my instant cue, went to watch them and for a couple of the episodes it says sorry, this episode is only available on disc! WTF??? I do have the by-mail service as well (I don't think you can get streaming-only as an option) and will use online to supplement, but if I only watch 2-3 movies a month, as has been the case in recent months, I'd be better off going through amazon.com, paying per movie and getting whatever the heck I want, including HD and new releases.
