Re: Len Elmore is horrible
Ugh. Gus Johnson sounded like a Xavier homer. There was a stretch of about 10 plays where he would barely comment on the KSU basket and then would try to inject enthusiasm on the Xavier end if they made the shot. Apparently you need to be behind in the game for ole Gus to give a hoot.

Are we sure it isn't "times out"? Because Attorneys General is the proper plural I believe.

It was like a full 30 seconds of Gus just screaming at the top of his lungs. Never heard a guy get so excited about a guy catching a long inbounds pass. Wow. -

i agree with this. Dick says "oh my!" but he doesn't take away from the game. Gus tries to make a 1st half 10ft baseline jumper into a game winner almost everytime. "rise and fffffiiirrree"

Gus reminds me of Ed Hightower. He tries to be the show.
The show is the game.

The show is the game. You know an announcer goes a bit over the top when he has his own soundboard... Gus Johnson Soundboard -2010 NCAA MARCH MADNESS- -

Just one example from last night. A KSU post player lowered his shoulder and initiated contact with the Xavier defender that had established position. The defender went down, but the officials decided it was a flop and let the contact go.
Len's opinion was that the officials should have called a foul on the Xavier player because the KSU player lost control of the ball and it resulted in a turnover. Hard to understand that type of logic. I agree with him. If there is contact and the guy went down and it is not a charge then why isn't it a block. I hate when refs don't call anything. I thought the refs sucked last night and have noticed a lot of inconsistently called games in the tournament where one second they are calling it close then the next it is like a brawl inside.

"rise and fffffiiirrree" That's exactly why I like him. Nobody can make a mediocre game exciting like Gus Johnson. The guy isn't trying to manufacture excitement, he's actually excited. I love the fact that he gets so into the game, because it's like watching a game with your buddies even when you have to watch by yourself. There are moments when it's appropriate for announcers to be silent, like when the Saints played their first game back in the Superdome after Katrina, that was amazing. But I enjoy the fact that GJ loves sports that much, because it makes me more excited watching it.

If it's a mediocre game then I don't care. I don't really have a problem with Gus but if the game is mediocre he won't keep me tuned in.

In high school you can call a technical when a player flops intentionally trying to draw a charge. I have never called one for that. I just tell the player not to do it again or it could be technical. I think in college they just let it go, if the basket is made or doesn't influence the player to lose control of the ball.
My thought on the play. He flopped he went down hard with not that much contact. If he would have stood his ground and the K State player moved him in a more convincing manner then I would have called the charge.
Len Elmore was correct. He should have called the block. I'm with you and Elmore on this one. I didn't see any evidence of a charge. The act of lowering a shoulder is in itself not a charge. Lowering a shoulder and running over someone is, but it didn't occur in this case. The defender is the one who created the bump. He flopped backward and also caused the KSU player to move back. The ball was lost behind the point of contact which to me justifies a block call. If the defender had either stood his ground or went straight up, then you let them play on.
