My father-in-law (well soon to be) found two this last Sunday. They live by the Quad Cities.

    Re: Mushroom Hunting

If you get a bunch and you want to store them drying works great. I've still got some from about 4 years ago. Every once in a while I pull some out soak them in milk to rehydrate and they are good as new. The milk adds a little more flavor, I almost like them better this way then fresh. The leftover milk has some good flavor in it also so you can use it in a sauce or like I like to do in scrambled eggs. All I did was clean them cut them in half and left them on drying racks for a day.

I dehydrated some and saved them for tailgating omelots for those early time football games.

Prime was the wrong word to use. I just meant known public areas where people like to hunt. This will be my second year hunting in Iowa City.. Last year I found one mushroom.... I remember how sad it looked. I fried it in a pan with an egg and cried as I ate it..

I like to flour mine up a little and sautee with butter, minced garlic, and some worchestershire. Breaded with cracker crumbs is good too. In fact, I don't know that I've ever had a bad morel.

We dip in egg batter, roll in townhouse cracker crumbs and fry them in butter. If you deepfat fry them it is a little tricky. I had trouble with them cooking quickly and were dry.

a few years ago, not in iowa, me and my step dad found 4 trash bags full of morels. best summer of my life i swear!!!

you stuff them with cheese and then you wet batter them in egg and then you dry batter them in seasoned flour. nothing is better than that!!!!!!!!!

    Re: Mushroom Hunting

Just got in from a short walk in my yard and found 7 small gray ones in quick order. They seemed small, about the size of my thumb, but I am not use to finding grays, so this might be normal size.
Regular morels should be only a few days behind..

Dehydrated morels sell for $22 an ounce or more here... Fresh are probably off the charts. Anyone want to send me some to sell? You can pay me in morels...

Seems like a lot of work for something I can buy at the store for a few bucks, is it worth the effort? I suppose for someone who is an outdoors enthusiast it can be pretty fun.
Morels are awesome. They are seriously one of the best foods ever, and you can't get them from stores.

    Re: Mushroom Hunting

I don't know if it is just a good area or it has to do with the trees, when I was turkey hunting a few years ago I stumbled across a walmart bag full in this ol apple orchard I used to hunt. It happened again the next year too. The next year, they cut down all of the trees and then the year after that we quit leasing it, but I did not see any then.
