If I have a baseball signed by Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle, not bringing it to a pawn shop.
If I have a priceless ANYTHING, I'm going to find the right audience to sell it to, an auction house, an antique collector, not the pawn shop.
$ today/now > $ later
Simple as that...these people need money and need it now...for whatever reason. It takes much more time and effort to find a buyer for most of the things you see on the show than it does to sell at the pawn shop.
Re: American Pickers and Pawn Stars
Love both shows.
As some have said already, anyone who is claiming that the AP guys are "preying on the elderly" have never had to deal with executing a large estate after a loved one passes. My grandparents had saved so much stuff (as a lot of people who lived through the Great Depression do) that we ended up just getting a dumpster and trashing 90% of it because it was just way too overwhelming..
For these folks to get some money, not too mention the satisfaction of actually cashing in on some of the items they have been holding onto for so long, is a service. It is not surprising that most of the old guys on the show always say they would love to have the American Pickers back at any time when they are interviewed at the end.
