    Mediacom's Q1 earnings way down

Mediacom reports lower earnings | desmoinesregister.com | The Des Moines Register-

Lost 4000 subscribers last quarter, wow! Betting those poor souls that still subscribe are going to see a rate increase here soon to help make up for all that lost revenue. You'd think at some point they'd realize they not only need to get more competitive with their pricing and packages but also improve their service reliability and customer service too. Those 3 things combined is what turned me off Medicom years ago and I won't even consider them again until they've greatly improved in those areas.

It looks like if you take out the gain from the subsidiary sale last year, they are basically flat year over year.

I am just happy their HD line has expanded alot recently. They are up to 45 HD channels in CR now, and have pretty much all the channels I watch in HD now. Still waiting on National Geographic and Versus though.

Re: Mediacom's Q1 earnings way down

I see your point with the subsidiary thing but the 2 biggest thing that caught my eye were this:

The company said it lost 4,000 basic cable television subscribers during the quarter, compared to a gain of 4,000 in the same quarter last year.
Mediacom reported current liabilities of $394.6 million against $223 million in current assets.
That's a pretty big swing in subscribers in a smaller market like this

Agreed, their HD offering has gotten much better as of late. Still waiting for a few channels myself, but most everything that I watch is there in HD.

Mediacom is not just Des Moines or Iowa. This link says 22 states, I think it is 24.

Yes Mediacom stinks, we need more competition. In Central Iowa, I do not like choosing between Qwest and Mediacom for high speed internet. I cannot get satellite at my house because of too many trees around the area.

You know what, I actually like Mediacom. Admitedly, I am still a new customer, so I have the introductory rate. But I love the fast internet. I have had good service from them. The only thing I would like is the MLB package.

These earnings must explain the deal I saw advertised--$24.95/month each for phone, internet, and digital cable for 2 year agreement(not sure if the 2nd year has any price hikes.)

If you signed a 2 yr agreement then you can bet the second year of your time with them will have prices jacked up enough to make rank right up there with being raped by fencepost.

I was with Mediacom from 1994 up to 2005 when they turned into a big pile of SUCK. They would have to give their service away for me to go back.

You are correct in that Mediacom goes far beyond central Iowa, but I believe Iowa is the majority of their subs. Des Moines is the biggest market they are in. All of their markets outside of Iowa are rural areas and small towns.

Re: Mediacom's Q1 earnings way down

I've had good luck with Mediacom. When I've had problems, their techincians have been johnny on the spot and generally done good work.

Sure it costs too much, but I really do like their HD stuff.

What I'd like to be able to do is get rid of ESPN and the Big 10 network and save some serious $.

Re: Mediacom's Q1 earnings way down

Mediacom's name is on a lot of sporting events around Central Iowa (including ISU) and they produce some local sports programming (which is the main reason I stay with them) so whether you subscribe or not, it isn't good for anyone if they get into financial trouble.
