Vinny Vinucchi's has some awesome Italian food. Been awhile since I've been there, but I used to take my ex there.

In general I'd recommend driving right through and staying somewhere easier on your pocket book. -

Galena is better for older folks romantic weekends. Holding hands, peck on the cheek, etc. Most of the "romantic" places are B&B's, not especially private for getting busy, if you catch my drift. If you're 60, good place to go. If not, you should look elsewhere.

Re: Galena
Dubuque was the half-way spot for me and the lady a few years back when we did long distance.
The Julien and the Holiday Inn in downtown Dubuque are nice little hotels. From there it's only a 15 min. drive to Galena. Dubuque surprisingly is a nice little weekend getaway spot. We did the Paddle boat cruise on the Mississippi and hit up the Casino afterwards. (if you get bored with Galena that is)

Re: Galena
My wife and I just went away on a romantic weekend in Galena a couple weeks ago (surprised her for a trip away for the first time in several years) - definately a great place for a romantic get away weekend. We stayed at the Stoney Creek Inn in one of their suites - King sized bed and large jacuzzi tub in the room. I know some of the B&B's are to be more romantic, but I have never stayed at one before. The price at Stoney Creek was $185 a night for the room we got. I was a nice room, but obviously still had the typical hotel feel to it.
Hope this helps.

Re: Galena
Irish Cottage (it's a hotel, not actually cottages) on the east end of town has whirlpool suites and fireplaces.
I'd be a bit wary of Eagle Ridge - or be crystal clear what you want. We stayed there a couple years ago, spent a small fortune for a room and got a stank, musty basement room with a walkout to nowhere. Never going back again.
I presume it's still there.... Vinni Vanuchi's is the place for dinner.

Re: Galena
Go to the website VRBO.com and go to Illinois then Galena.
Lot's of options for Galena it appears. I start at VRBO for every place I travel. A lot of times you can rent out a persons condo or townhouse for cheaper than a hotel room.

Re: Galena
I have spent a lot of time there, have a friend that has a house on the south course at ER.
If you want romantic, stay in Galena at a BB, or use VRBO like someone earlier said. I would only stay at ER if I was planning golf.
IMO, VV is ok for lunch, but not even close to the best place to eat. It depends on what you are in the mood for, but there are a lot of eating options. Backstreet is always really good, and there is a place on main that I can't remember the name of. Corner spot on east side, looks like a dump from the outside, but phenomenal food (Maybe Log Cabin Cafe?). Green St, and General's. Perry Street is supposed to be very good. We have eaten there twice, ok, but not as good as some others. Fried Green Tomatoes used to be really good when it was out in the country. I think it is just ok now. Great food there, so you can't really go wrong.
A lot of the restaurants are run by families out of Chicago.
