Re: Fishing: 61-Inch Paddlefish Caught In Cedar River
My brother goes paddlefishing all the time on the Mississippi. They are freaky looking.
We went bow-fishing this weekend for carp. Unfortunately we got two of what appeared to be asian carp (not sure if that's the right name). The ones that jump out of the water when boats go by - very dangerous.

I went out with a few friends last year just looking to snag these fish. We ended up finding a great spot and reeled them in nearly every other cast. I brought in the biggest one and we didn't have a scale stiff enough to measure it. Our guess was it was around 75-90 lbs. THey are very weird looking fish and are tough to hang on to. THe one I caught required three of us to hold it up due to the slippery skin and the weight. The are a fun fish to catch because they put up a good fight.

West Okoboji used to be home to a large number of paddlefish in the early 1900's until they were overfished out of existence there. I remember seeing old black and white photos showing 4-5 men pulling huge paddles out of holes in the ice.
