Things to do in Roanoke, Virginia

Has anyone been? I will be in Roanoke on business for about 3 weeks. What things should I do/see, what are some good local establishments to eat at?

    Thanks for the help.

Used to live in the vicinity. WWII memorial is in Bedford, around 45 miles away. Peaks of Otter is a nice mountain area outside Bedford, too. Good hiking. Appomattox Court House (where Civil War ended) is a little over an hour to the east. Lexington is the north, and it's a beautiful small town. Virginia Military Institute and Washington & Lee College there. Summer time now, but when school's in VMI is a neat place to see. And the Blue Ridge Parkway is a beautiful drive.

My Mom and Dad live about 30 miles from Roanoke. The scenery is beautiful. If you get a chance just take a drive in the mountains.

You can do what I did; keep driving North on I-81 till you get to PA!

So you took Richard Simmons with you the last time you went?

Agree completely. Check out any Civil War stuff you can find. Definitely do the courthouse.

I believe R.E. Lee and his wife are buried in Lexington, where Washington and Lee is located.

Here are some cool things to do there:

Gravesite of Lt. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson & Lee Chapel
    "Dog Eat Dog"
