We have had Compaq's and emachine's in the past. Curious how good a Dell or a HP would be.
Considering you've already dealt with two of the worst computer brands out there, Dell and HP should sound even better. Compaq is just a cheap version of HP anyway.
I was just out on Dell's web site and it looks like most of the deals are on laptops these days. It was actually hard to put together a PC for under $500.
You may be better off going to Dells refurbished site and find one there. I'd rather have a refurbished/scratchnDent that's loaded than one of their new PC's.
Of course if it was me I'd just build my own and get what you want out of a PC but that's just me.
Serious question here - why would you get a desktop instead of a laptop? I'm guessing that if you're going to spend < $500 you're probably not going to do any gaming or anything that requires significant computing power or graphics capabilities that might require a desktop.
