I'm up for a Laparoscopic hernia repair. I'm hoping for a shorter recovery than with the open repair I've had before. Didn't we have a lineman who had a laparoscopic appendectomy. My recollection (often faulty) is that he played less than two weeks later. Is that right?

not sure about the player, but my wife had a laparoscopic procedure about two years ago. I would say two weeks was about the recovery time. She was up and moving long before that, though.

I had laproscopic hernia surgery last year. It was done on Dec. 4 and I went skiing in Colorado on Dec. 27 with no problems. The doctors won't promise anything but they're pretty conservative in their recovery time. Good luck!

Yep, I had it on a Friday and was back at work on Monday. The weirdest part with abdominal laparoscopic procedures is just that they often pump your belly full of air, so your stomach will feel super-bloated for at least a day. The incision(s) is/are really the part that's sensitive for a couple of weeks, and it's way better than incisions in other places of your body can be (since you have fewer nerve endings usually there). They were able to do one of my incisions through my belly button, and so it was teeny-tiny. I'm 8 months pregnant, and this is the first time I've ever even seen the scar.
You'll do great - just plan on sitting in a recliner for a day or two. :) I've obviously never had your particular kind of lap, but it really should be way better than a "regular" surgery.
It most likely will be much quicker than your previous open repair. You're talking about 3-4 holes that are 5-10mm in diameter, depending on your surgeons technique, ability, etc.
That is in replace of an incision that is several inches long.
This is the ONLY reason why laparoscopic surgeries are used and why they have become the standard of care for most abdominal surgeries, save large scale cancer removal or transplants.

I had 2 hernias repaired laparoscopically in May. One umbilical and one inguinal. If it was just the inguinal it would have been a breeze. The umbilical of course they have to mess around with your abs so they are sore a bit longer. I was still able to be up and about in 2-3 days. After a week you should feel fine. Just be careful and don't think you can start lifting stuff after a week or 2.
