Could be swallows. They are chasing the bugs that you disturb while mowing and eat them. Usually blue backs with a yellow/tan belly.
this is what i thought of initially when reading the post. they feed on bugs chased up by the mower.

Whenever that time is when all those locusts come out - I had them swarm at me when trying to mowe one year. Now that was scary. A huge oak tree full of locusts chasing me....
Never had a bird - that might be a bit more intimidating though.
