    Re: Iowans now have accents...

My pet peeve are people who get there undies in a twist about the whole soda/pop thing. I prefer pop, but dont mind people that say soda. When you go to the south though, the whole Coke thing is annoying.

I do have to say that IMO, Iowans overall don't have too much of an accent, besiders southern Iowa. When i've traveled, people cant place the "accent" to where I'm from.

I wish i had a boston accent straight out of the departed.

I grew outside of Dyersville, so maybe it is a Northeast Iowa thing. My mom calls the town Dersville or Darsville. Drives me freaking insane.

Do other people in town pronounce it the same way your mom does?

I want a pop...it certainly drove the ATLiens nuts when I called it that...great discussion, and perhaps Brooklyn and I are too influenced by the Metro(s) in which we live/have lived..

Also I agree with those that have dinner at noon followed by a light lunch then supper.....bingo!

No I have noticed the language patterns change as country music being the first to influence then the comedy and finally nascar......and man what the old country boys would say regarding the bastardization of their musical arts....Lefty has rolled over in his grave so many times he wore the boards out.

People also bring it out more so in certain situations...especially state and county fair time.......WHOA THERE SILVER!

It's interesting though, I often find myself defending rural america in the city and the city in rural america........and by city I don't mean something as small as Des Moines.

    Re: Iowans now have accents...

Just around the Des Moines area I notice different accents. People on the East side tend to talk a little different from people on the West side. During the 70s and 80s growing up, there was a lot of Italians on the south side and they talked with a different accent. Warren Country sounds different than Polk County. I lived in Mn. for 5 years and one thing that bothered me coming back to Iowa was some of the slower talking or redneck type accents of some Iowans was the bad grammar that went with it. It is one thing to have an accent that sounds like you can do voice overs for "King of the Hill", but it is worse when there is pathetic grammar along with it. Translation-Tavern Hawks. :)

Very true...hell from Philly up to Providence there's perhaps 200 different variations in parts of speech. (perhaps 200 is too many haha)

My inlaws are from South West Iowa. Definetly a little different than North East Iowa where I'm from.

    Re: Iowans now have accents...

On the lunch/dinner/supper debate, I grew up with lunch always being the noon meal, and dinner and supper both meaning the evening meal with supper being used much more often. The only people I know who don't do that are my grandparents, who like to use lunch and dinner to both mean the noon meal.

As far as accents go, I suppose I have a bit of a Missourah/southern accent having grown up far down in the southwest corner of Iowa (I don't actually say "Missourah", btw). I can't detect it, but I guess other people can. My grandma and quite a few other people down here always throw the R into the word 'wash', which drives me insane.

My roommates last year were all from NE Iowa and we had some friends from Minnesota, and they have some heavy accents. In particular, I had to laugh every time I heard them say the word 'bag'. They all pronounce it as "bay-g". After being around them for so long I picked up the whole "Minnesoooooota" thing and have gotten a couple comments about it since I got home for the summer.
