With the current wars going on, the A-10 is not the bastard stepchild of the Air Force aviation community. It is actually one of the top jets being requested out of pilot training and is one of few jets that the pilots are trying not to leave. Other jets are being downsized and their pilots are moving on to UAV's or anything else the AF wants to do with them, but the A-10 is continuously getting upgraded (A-10C, new wings) and all it really needs is new engines.
I never see the Army getting the A-10 b/c that is what was supposed to happen around Desert Storm but the AF wouldn't release it and the Army doesn't really have enough fixed wing qualified pilots to man all the cockpits of the A-10.
